What is the origin of the stock market?

Question by Clifton M: What is the origin of the stock market?
When our country was founded, businesses just bought and sold things using a medium of exchange. When, how and why did the stock market evolve? I may sound ignorant, but I think that a lot of people have the same question. I also think that most publicly traded companies care more about their stock price than anything else. The company that I work for posts it on their web site every day, (like it’s going to motivate employees to work hareder to make it go up). Who decides increase or decrease the stock price? Is this just an arbitrary decision, or is it scientific?

this sums it up

by the way, this is where the terms ‘bull market’ and ‘bear market’ originated as well…if the tree was full of ‘bullitins’ it was known as a bull market.
when the tree was ‘bare’ it was known as a bear market.

The way is called a “DRIP” or Dividend ReInvestment Plan. Now in order to get the dividneds to reinvest, you must be an owner of the stock. But, many companies have plans that allow you to send money directly to them to buy the initial shares. You just have to visit the web site of each company you are interested in (usually “companyname.com”) and click on their “investor relations” tab. You can also check on www.directinvesting.com, a web site for the moneypaper which deals with drips. There is a tab to read a free sample issue. Also use a search engine to look for drips.

What are some good free online stock market simulation games?

Question by checky: What are some good free online stock market simulation games?
I am thinking of the sort of site that gives you a certain amount of fantasy money to invest, then tracks your investment day-to-day with the real stock market figures. A site many people use would be good, run by a trustworthy company or person. The less info I have to give them when I register, the better – I hate spam and having to give my personal info to everyone on the web.

best way to pick longer term investments is to go with what you use or buy a lot of, or simply like the company – then do some investigation into their business model.
I started out by buying wholefoods stock back in the day because most of my paycheck went to them – turned out to be a killer investment…

First, make sure you have an emergency account ex. savings account.

Then, you can set up a brokerage account with a brokerage house, buy stock from the company directly, or through a no load mutual fund.

What are the best companies to buy stock in that are the leaders in speech synthesis (text to speech)?

Question by pkeck: What are the best companies to buy stock in that are the leaders in speech synthesis (text to speech)?
I’d like to invest in the best companies that create software, computer chips, etc. that allow the computer to read text from web pages, Word documents, etc. These would be companies with mass market applications and very high voice quality (sounds like human speech).
