Start with businesses you know locally, get a few clients and ask them for a testimonial. You could also look on craigslist and see if any businesses in your area are looking for web design work.

Question by Edmond_Dantes: How to get a web page for my small business?
I want to publish my small business in the web. It should be able to get orders of my products and get online payments (credit cards, paypal, etc). I know there are companies that do this but I guess they are expensive. Can I do it myself? If not, do you know a low cost web design company?
Answer by Kevin k
You can do it yourself if you learn how to do it. There are several books on the subject of web page design. Consult your public library to see what they have. If you find a book that is really helpful, you might want to buy a copy of it. There are several people and companies out there that create/maintain web pages, if you want to spend the money to have it done professionally.
Accepting credit cards and Pay-pal need to be set up with those institutions. They may even provide the software you need to process the orders. Talk to your bank or the Small Business Administration for pointers.

Question by : What is best email marketing company for a small business?
I’m looking to send monthly newsletters to my customers. I’m not a techie and just want to send a few simple emails. An easy to use program/service is my most important consideration, with affordability a close second. I have the emails, (I don’t need a list). What I need is the service/function.
Answer by nutritive
I know of a couple of options:
1) Constant Contact (http://www/constantcontact.com) – their plans start at $ 15/month for 500 e-mails per month.
2) Cooler E-mail (http://www.cooleremail.com) – starts at $ 19.95 for 250 e-mails per month.
I believe both of these services walk you through setting up your e-mail in HTML (if you want to).
Do you have a website for your business?
Even if you aren’t a “techie”, you can build a basic site which would give your business even more exposure. The company that I built my site through also offers e-mail marketing and it is included in the price of the web service. They also have a block-by-block site builder so you don’t need to know HTML and they submit all of your pages to the search engines so you get traffic more quickly. If you want to see the site I built with the block-by-block builder (with very little HTML knowledge) and find out about the web service/e-mail marketing, go to http://www.eatingwithfoodallergies.com/aboutthissite.html

If you do one thing to promote your small business website, make it Local SEO. It is one very powerful online asset that can boost your company’s online presence. Once you get your local SEO profile set up, you have to care for it, nurture it, manage it. Local SEO is not a set it and forget it proposition. Small businesses that hire a professional SEO service to manage their local SEO generally see an excellent ROI. SEO resellers who offer local SEO to their clients find that it’s a “gateway” product. Essentially, clients who sign up for the SEO reseller’s local SEO service quickly see the value of SEO and are inspired to sign up for additional SEO reseller services. The SEO reseller who offers a full menu of web marketing services, such as PPC, social media and email marketing, can upsell those services to the local SEO client. SEO resellers who join the HubShout SEO reseller program have no shortage of web marketing services to offer their prospects and clients. Any web marketing service that a client requests can be handled by HubShout’s SEO reseller program. This webinar is part of HubShout’s white label SEO reseller sales training series.
Question by Colin B: Small Business Advertising: Where is a good place to advertise a small business locally?
Our target is middle/upper class people. Any ideas besides the local newspaper and craigslist? We need to get the word out there!

Its always good to have a website… this way you can target your local market with online and offline advertising..
In online advertising there are two major distinctions, paid and not paid (FREE). Paid online advertising is easy to understand. You have banners placed on other websites or emails that are sent to an email mailing list and you have pay per click (PPC) which is you paying for an ad placement on another website or search engine. The placement is charged a fee with a fluctuating rate for each click to your ad that takes a prospective customer to your website.
Banner ad placement works best when there is a limited capacity offer such as a short supply of a product or service or you have a limited amount of time for the offer. Banners are normally more expensive so its a better idea to have a banner for a trip to Vegas or next weeks rock concert than a landscaper service in June.
PPC is good for most small business advertising but unfortunately if its not done the right way, it can be quite expensive. PPC, if done right can bring a very high return on investment (ROI) and can catapult your business from nothing, to a steady stream of customers in a short period of time, at a fraction of other advertising methods.
Unpaid or free advertising in most cases will not cost you money, but it will cost you time. If done correctly and thoroughly, certain aspects of free advertising for your small business will take many hours to perfect. The most effective forms of free advertising are search engine optimization (SEO) and social networking.
SEO in simple terms is building your online presence to provide the best chance of being seen by search engines such as Yahoo® and primarily Google®. This is done in 4 primary steps:
1. Establish keywords for the basis of creating content
2. Building content around and about your keywords
3. Linking to and from similar websites with good content
4. Adding more content based on keywords
Notice the focus is on your websites’ content in all four steps.
SEO is not easy because it it perpetually evolving and it involves setting a plan in motion, then waiting for results, while working it for different angles behind the scenes. In the end you still have no control over how your results are presented, only the search engines have it. Your SEO work is never done and it is time consuming, but with the right strategy and implementation, you will achieve great success. For more information visit our website section on SEO: 7 Steps to an Effective SEO Advertising Strategy.
For social networking, its a little different than SEO but its basis, free online advertising, and the end result, a very high ROI, are the same. Social networking is establishing a presence on a community based website, or creating a community on your own website. Social networking provides you with not only free advertising but a constant source of communication with your customers, and potential customers. Using social networking relies on tapping into the organic interest people will generally have in the content you provide. Social networking websites are growing at a rapid pace, and the amount of time people spend on those websites makes it more likely you will be exposed to more people. Establishing your presence on a social networking website should be consistent with your overall web presence and if done right will only enhance your small business footprint online.
