What’s the process for hiring a web designer for a small company?

Question by P: What’s the process for hiring a web designer for a small company?
The small company I work for asked me to look into hiring a web designer. Where do I begin? Do I need to create a request for proposal or do I create the proposal and put it out to bid? Can anyone help me? I’m not a marketing person. Thanks so much!

Can I become a Web Designer without programming?

Question by Dnice: Can I become a Web Designer without programming?
I have a taken a few Web Design courses using Dreamweaver and love it. I can write HTML, however I hate programming. I bombed my C++ class. Is it possible to be a successful Web Designer without programming? I’m looking to just create simple brochure type websites for people without all of the complex programming. There has to be a market for companies who just want a simple web page that can be created by mastering Dreamweaver and Fireworks. What do you think?

I am a web designer, and my boss wants me to learn about business/sales/marketing jargon. Good books to start?

Question by : I am a web designer, and my boss wants me to learn about business/sales/marketing jargon. Good books to start?
I will be communicating a lot with customers and I will need to sound professional and knowledgeable on the sales-end of the designs we’re creating. I know a bit about social media marketing and SEO but I need some solid business know-how to compliment that.

Any titles you recommend?

Emily,
A few books that you might want to consider are:

1) The Ultimate Sales Machine – Hands down one of the best marketing and sales books I have ever read. Author is Chet Holmes.

and

I’m a silversmith/jewelry designer. Can I sell on Blogger? How do I add my company to search engines?

Question by Jessica: I’m a silversmith/jewelry designer. Can I sell on Blogger? How do I add my company to search engines?
I have a Yahoo 360 page listed under Jessica Dow, which is open to the public. Somone with experience might get a better idea of the best market for my work after seeing some examples. I also have links there to on-line portfolios and my new BLOGGER page ( which has some larger pictures of my custom work). I already have a few things on eBAY, on a trial basis. But I don’t think eBAY is the right place for work such as mine. Any advice would be very helpful. I’m planning on starting a professional web-site, but most of the web-site designers I’ve seen charge prices currently not within my budget. I know there are site-builders, but I don’t want a cheap knock off design ( template ) for my site. I want my site to reflect the same quality and beauty as the work I sell there. If that means I have to wait to hire a high priced professional, I’ll do that. I’d appreciate hearing of any other options.

That’s a good idea–I’d first thoroughly read Blogger’s TOS (Terms of Service), their rules, etc. To make sure, I’d e-mail them (there’s most likely a contact link somewhere on the website) asking about your business and your ideas to sell on Blogger. It doesn’t seem necessary, but imagine your site being shut down to all the customers and the consequences of breaking the rules (if there are any against it, that is).

As for getting it noticed, a good first step is to get a ‘dot-tk’. Basically, you pick a URL for your website (like mydesgins.tk). After that, you submit your Blogger URL, and anyone who types the URL from .tk is will be redirected to your site. So if they type in mydesigns.tk, that will be the URL in the bar, but your Blogger will load. It does have one page of advertisments beore redirecting, but it allows you to put in keywords to help people find your site on search engines. Even if no one uses the .tk URL, just having your site up on search engines is a benefit itself!

As for a professional website design–I’ll make you one, free-of-charge. No links, nothing. I know, coming from someone you hardly know (and for free), it sounds like I wouldn’t be able to do a quality job, but I will–I’ll do it because I enjoy it. Contact me with details if you want me to make a layout, good luck with selling!

Savoy’s Designer and the Branding Manager

My website designer asked me to come up with a list of keywords?

Question by Mug R: My website designer asked me to come up with a list of keywords?
to program into the website to help with web search optimization. I am a wedding planner, could you give me some tips on the keywords, can I use too many? Is there certain ones I should avoid or look to use? Thanks for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by adaviel
keywords are an outdated concept IMO, google stopped using them in headers a while ago. So don’t overload on them ore you will be seen as a word spammer.
But a small number are OK, especially worked into the text.

Just imagine what someone searching for your business would use as search terms. Your location for one thing, maybe your zip code, along with obvious ones like “wedding planner”. Add things like catering and floral, but don’t lie.

What do you think? Answer below!
