Who is the best person to contact in a business about my company offering visual communications services?

Question by fred LH: Who is the best person to contact in a business about my company offering visual communications services?
We offer services in advertising, branding, remote proofing, re-touching, photo/copy/color management, packaging, collateral, etc. We can help at any stage in the business cycle: creative, pre-media, production or distribution. Since I’m new here, and have little training in this aspect, I was wondering who would be appropriate to speak with at a small or mid-size company: someone in marketing and business development or web design, a media manager, or someone else? Thank you.

In a small or mid-size company, you’re probably going to be dealing with the owner or an officer of the company. You can start with the business development folks and get them to refer you up, but the decision-making power for marketing and communications expenditures usually rests with the owners or high-level executives.

Question by KT: What’s a job title for someone in Marketing & Communications that also manages a web site (content) and…
also speaks to companies, hotels, and such coordinating getting people to come to the bar I represent.
My company refers to my job as a “Marketing Director.” However, I have noticed that some of the larger companies I try to contact will automatically have nothing to do with me once I mention marketing. We have tried many titles, such as “Mistress of Propoganda,” (which I threw out immediately), Marketing Director, Hospitality Coordinator, but none seem to encompass everything I do…

– Point contact for company web site (updates, changes, additions);
– Marketing for e-mail campaigns, web campaigns;
– Excellent working knowledge of CSS, HTML, XHTML, JavaScript;
– Print advertisement design (posters, postcards, magazine ads, etc.);
– Interactive advertisement design;
– Main Contact for reservations, company parties, private parties, etc.

It’s a huge mix of many things!! Does anyone have any ideas of a great title I can put on my business cards?

I recommend Director of Online Operations or Internet Operations. Would let them know you are a decision maker, are tech and web savvy.

What’s a job title for someone in Marketing & Communications that also manages a web site (design)?

Question by XarQuid: What’s a job title for someone in Marketing & Communications that also manages a web site (design)?
Basically, my company refers to my job as a “Webmaster.” This job title is outdated in my opinion. I basically was hired to do the following (with the following knowledge):

– Point contact for company web site (updates, changes, additions, new site designs, project manager/lead for all things company web);
– Marketing for e-mail campaigns, web campaigns and webcasts;
– Excellent working knowledge of WC3, CSS, HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, PHP;
– Update content via CMS interface (but also manage all templates in this CMS);
– Print advertisement design (posters, postcards, magazine ads, etc. etc.);
– Interactive advertisement design (FLASH, for example);
– Product strategy from a marketing perspective.

It’s a huge mix of web design, web development, advertising, graphic design etc. and I can’t figure out what to call it 🙂

A friend of mine used to do a lot of that stuff (viral campaigns/web design/web analytics/general marketing meetings) and his job title was E-Marketing consultant.

In my experience, adding consultant to a job title implies you don’t know what to call it or that the job will have some turnover/short-term employment associated to it. I wouldn’t get too hung up on job title as long as you’re getting paid what you think is a fair amount for the work you do.
