Day 5 recap

Morning weigh in - 212.4lbs

Breakfast - 2 Weetabix in soy milk

Lunch - Punjab Eggplant

Dinner - …at this point I feel that I do need to point out that today is Shrove Tuesday. As such, it is built into my genetic makeup that as a Brit I must consume pancakes at some point today. Why is this, I hear you ask? Well, today is Pancake Day in England (or Jif Lemon day for those that buy into their ad campaign), and with me heading off to England on Friday I must abide by the societal norm, or I may be denied access to the country. So, for dinner - German Crepes with Lemon butter @ IHOP. Later - glass of white wine & an Italian ice.

Exercise - I did a 1/4 mile walk at lunch. This evening I did 20 minutes on the Bowflex, 30 minutes / 3 miles on the treadmill, 20 minutes on the Bowflex

Treadmill Readout

Post exercise snack - 100 calorie cup of tuna.

Day 4 recap

Morning weigh in - 214.8lbs, up from yesterday, but still down overall

Breakfast - 2 weetabix in soy milk

Lunch - Tomato Basil soup

Dinner - Black Bean soup, tofu, strawberries,  lemon italian ice (really not necessary), glass of White Wine (necessary).

Exercise - 20 minute Bowflex, 3 miles in 30 minutes on the Treadmill, 20 minutes Bowflex

Day 3 recap

Breakfast: 2 waffles with golden syrup

25 minutes into my 30 minute ride to the soccer pitch I noticed my phone was blinking. At the next light I took a look… the fields were closed. Time for plan B. All I had to do was come up with plan B…

  • 20 minutes on the Bowflex
  • 4 mile run
  • 1/2 mile walk (cooldown)
  • 20 minutes on the Bowflex

Then it was time to weigh myself…

Day 3 weigh in

Yep, it shows me as being down 8lbs in the last 2 days… a 3.7% loss. Of course, this was before lunch, and directly after exercise, so add a couple back on, but still it’s looking good. For the others in the contest… don’t expect this again from me, my target is 205-208, so I’m almost (back) there…

Lunch - Harris Teeter Tomato & Rice soup

Dinner -Red Curry Rice, Tortilla chips, Raspberry Yogurt, strawberries

Day 2 recap

Breakfast - Weetabix flakes & soy milk

3.5 mile run / jog / walk.  Why not a 3.5 mile run?  Well, I ran wearing some new tracksuit pants, which apparently were not designed for running.  Yes, I had my own Janet Jackson moments as my ‘wardrobe malfunctioned’, which meant that I had to cinch the front of the pants to keep myself decent, which wasn’t really great for running.  I followed that up with 20 minutes on the bowflex.

Lunch - 1/2 Starbucks egg salad sandwich… ok, ok, and a wine tasting of ~5 wines, which means that I had a few crackers with cheese.

Dinner - Tomato soup & a crab cake w/no bread.

Tomorrow = soccer in the morning, always a good workout as long as I remember to warm up first…

Day 1 recap

Breakfast - 2 Weetabix in soy milk.

Lunch - 1/2 a mayonnaise sandwich… ok, the sticker said tuna salad, but I think Giant tends to overdo it on the condiments.

Snacks - none

Dinner  -none… not by plan, but I was so tired I fell asleep at 5.30, and didn’t wake up until 10pm.  Watched a movie, then went back to sleep.

Day one temptations…

Of course day 1 would be the day of an all day client meeting, complete with bagels, cream cheese, cookies, alcohol filled chocolates, etc…

Breakfast

Game on…

So thanks to a few dinners out this week, I managed to move the scales the other way, just to give me a little bit of a chance in this contest.

Starting Weight

Today I start this moving in the other direction. When I did this last year I checked my weight daily. If it went down, I was motivated by my success, and if it went up I was motivated to try harder. It’s not a lot of fun, but it’s a great feeling to see those numbers go down over time.

My Motivation behind this Weight Loss Contest

Posted by Simon Heseltine

Hello, and welcome to my fat fighting blog. For those who don’t know me, I’m an English / American dual citizen SEO, working for Serengeti Communications, an agency inside the Virginia side of the Washington DC beltway. I write about online marketing topics on EndlessPlain.com and SearchEngineTigers, along with the occasional post on SearchEngineLand and SearchEngineGuide.

Ok, now that’s our of the way, let’s start with a timeline to explain why I’m doing this…

  • 1990 - December 9th 2006 - 240-245 lbs
  • January 31st 2007 - 210 lbs
  • October 28th 2007 (directly after the Marine Corps Marathon) - 198.8 lbs
  • January 22nd 2008 - 216.8 lbs (the day Donna asked me if I wanted in on this contest)

You see the problem? After the marathon I stopped exercising, and fell back into bad habits. On the plus side I still fit into the smaller size clothes that I bought last year, on the down side, if I don’t do something soon that won’t be true for long. I believe that, in the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that I am 6′5″.

Problems & Pitfalls:

  • 2 bad knees. There’s no way I can run without braces for more than a couple of miles. I’m still amazed I managed 26.2 last year.
  • Cheese & bread, and let’s not mention cheese on bread. ;)
  • SES - London & SES - NYC. How can one diet and exercise while traveling and networking? Not easily.
  • Vacation. I’m taking the week before SES-London to visit my family. There will be many temptations there - Chocolate Biscuits, Mr. Kipling’s exceedingly good Bramley Apple Pies, Vanilla Slices, etc, etc, etc.

Plusses

  • I’m running a 1/2 marathon on March 29th, so I have to get in shape by then.
  • I have at least kept up with my weekly soccer game, so I know I can do 2 hours worth of short sprinting.
  • I’m a competitive person, if you think I’m going to let that kid Boykin beat me (yes, he’s younger than me, not by much, but he is), you’ve got another think coming. ;)

So what’s my plan to fight the fat? It’s going to be a simple matter of will power. I’m going to cut back on the food, restricting myself to Weetabix in the morning, rather than stopping in to the local Giant for a muffin or bagel on the way in, and so on. I’ll set myself up with an exercise regimen, getting back into using the Bowflex and the treadmill, heading outside when I can. My target? Ideally I want to stay in the 205-208 range, but for March 31st I think I can get back to around the 200lb mark, especially with that 1/2 marathon 2 days before…

Tune in tomorrow for my starting weight…
