But you don’t need to do that and it is not the most effective way. The most effective way is to put up pages that attract people to link to you. I host the Boston Sushi Society pages and many pages on travel or sports photos, restaurant reviews, etc and I get surprised all the time when I see how high I rank as an example:

I have never purchased any adwords or tried tricks like stuffing lots of unseen words in my web pages. I don’t have any fancy flash programs or obnoxious sounds . And the entire site was down for more than a year because of US problems with the site where my servers used to be located. When I was able to arrange new sites, I had to reconstruct most of my pages and probably lost a lot of the sites linking to me during that time. Each day you need to look at your access.log and search for “search?” you will see when google searches hit you. Use that info to build up your attractiveness. Look at your errors.log every day and see if people are hitting broken links.

You can’t pay to be on the top ten in Google. There are companies that promise things like this but most of them are not legitimate. You really need to look into what’s called SEO (Search Engine Optimization.) Also, you’ll need to add meta data to your webpages and make sure your web pages have lots of relevant text that would cause your webpage to show up when someone searches for your product or keyword. Use a site like websitegrader.com to get some more tips. Although, don’t be too concerned about the grade it gives you as some criteria that it uses to grade you may not be relevant. Just take what info works for you and disregard the rest.
There are lots of ways to get your website more known. The fastest way, is through PPC Pay Per Click…but, if you don’t know how to do it right, it can be a costly lesson.
The next best thing is to get listed high in Google for the specific keywords your site is focused on. This brings a lot of targeted traffic.
Getting listed higher in Google is everyone’s goal, and through, article writing and submitting to article directories, using social bookmarks, I use onlywire .com. These all help exposure, and give you backlinks to your site, which in turn helps you rank higher in Google for your tageted keywords.
Now, for an added big boost, you want your backlinks to be of high quality, and having a high page rank, which in turn feeds to your site, giving you more juice in Google, or any search engine.
