Day Eight Recap

I was so busy trying to catch up on work Monday, that I really didn’t concern myself with food that much. By the time I finished answering emails, catching up on Twitter tweets as well as unread blog posts in my RSS reader and putting together this post, it was lunch time. Maybe that is a good thing?

Here is what I consumed on Day 8 (Monday).

Breakfast:

Skipped as I was too busy.

Lunch:

Buffalo Patty w/ Cheddar (1/3 lb.)

Dinner (Dara Thai Cafe):

Tom Kai Gai Soup (2 bowls)
Cashew Chicken (1 serving)

Other:

Coffee (full pot)
Oolong Tea (1 cup)
Water (64 oz.)
Salad w/ Cilantro Caesar Dressing & feta (2 bowls)

Exercise:

Our walk was cut a bit short as my dog started to limp. We walked about 30 minutes total as she braved it out. Sadly, she is still limping today. I’m going to have to see if I can find out what is ailing her - probably a sticker or something. Otherwise, she’ll have to go to the vet.

As I weighed myself today, I weighed in at 229 lbs. which is the same as yesterday. This is the first day I haven’t seen any loss.

Week-End Recap

I try to stay off the computer over the weekend, so now that it is Monday, I really cannot remember in detail what I ate. I know we had Mahi on Saturday and some left-over London Broil on Sunday afternoon. Oh, yeah - Sunday night I had Buffalo burgers (without the bread). Other than that, sticking to the usual - no breads or starches of any kind and no sugar!

I did not exercise this weekend but will pick that back up today.

When I weighed in this morning - 229 lbs. That’s 12 lbs loss since I started which is exactly where I assumed I’d be. I feel better. My wife says my stomach looks smaller (yey!).

One more week of proteins and veggies while avoiding starches and sugars and then next Monday I can begin to incorporate whole grains such as whole wheat breads, brown rice and the like. I can also have my red wine again. However, I think I’m going to continue on the proteins/vegetables and only take advantage of the whole grains and wine once, maybe twice a week.

Day Five Recap

The big temptation over the last two days for me was three super-sized chocolate and maple long johns from Lamar’s Donuts. We bought them for our daughter who turned nineteen on Thursday as she just loves their donuts. She ate one right away. However, the other two sat around for the better part of Thursday and some of Friday. I kept opening the box and looking at them, thinking to myself, “just one.” Fortunately for my diet’s sake, I resisted. Now they are gone (thank God).

I was going to take a picture of them sitting so pretty in the box and post it here, just to tempt my fellow contest competitors. Lucky for them, I am not that cruel. ;)

Here is what I consumed on Day 5 (Friday).

Breakfast:

Leftover Black Beans (1 serving)
Salad with Italian Dressing (1 serving)
Spicy V8 Juice (6 oz.)

Lunch:

Thom Ka Gai Soup from favorite Thai restaurant (3 servings - no rice)

Dinner (Outback Steakhouse):

London Broil Steak (10 oz.)
Steamed Broccoli (1 serving)
Grilled Zucchini and Yellow Squash (1 serving)

Other:

Coffee (3/4 pot)
Oolong Tea (1 cup)
Water (64 oz.)
Pecans (handful)

Exercise:

45 minute walk with the dog (Jodi). She’s happy again as she missed her walk on Thursday.

As I weighed myself today, I weighed in at 232 lbs. That’s a total loss thus so far of 9 lbs. If I would have given in and eaten that Lamar’s Donut, I’d probably be back to original weight. Can’t tempt myself like that again.

Day Four Recap

Okay, I am starting to see some real progress. I weighed in today (Day 5) at 233. That’s a total loss thus of 8 lbs. so far. While I still have the gut, I am feeling slightly less “fluffy” all the way around.

On this day we celebrated our youngest daughter’s birthday. She is nineteen. That means Outback Steakhouse for dinner. Yey!

Anyway, here is what I consumed on Day 4 (Thursday).

Breakfast:

Virgina Ham w/ Cheddar (4 slices)
Spicy V8 Juice (6 oz.)

Lunch (Chili’s):

Sirloin Steak (8 oz.)
Steamed Broccoli (1 serving)

Dinner (Outback Steakhouse):

Alice Springs Chicken
Green Beans
Caesar Salad, no croƻtons

Other:

Coffee (1/2 pot)
Oolong Tea (1 cup)
Starbucks Grande Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte (skinny means sugar free and low fat)
Water (80 oz.)
Peanuts (handful)

Even though I ate out twice, as you can see from the list above, one can still eat healthy.

Exercise:

Due to the fact that we were running some errands in town and it was my daughter’s birthday, I did not have time to walk today. Jodi (my dog) is sad.

Day Three Recap

I’m still feeling pretty good - no sugar withdrawals, no uncontrollable cravings for starches. Part of that might be associated with the fact that I have been so busy with work. My work itself has kept my mind off of the foods I am missing.

Here is what I consumed on Day 3 (Wednesday).

Breakfast:

Turkey Breast w/ Cheddar (4 slices)
Spicy V8 Juice (6 oz.)

Lunch:

Hamburger Patty (16 oz.)
Black Beans over Cabbage (1 serving)

Dinner:

Turkey Breast w/ Cheddar (4 slices)
Salad with Italian Dressing (2 servings)

This is a pretty dull dinner but I was busy watching the Phoenix Suns try to beat the new Orleans Hornets, which they failed to do even though the game went into double overtime.

Other:

Coffee (3/4 pot)
Oolong Tea (1 cup)
Water (80 oz.)
Peanuts (couple handfuls)

Exercise:

A brisk walked with Jodi (my dog) for about 50 minutes or approximately 3 miles. We explored some new neighborhoods in Anthem this day.

As I weighed myself the 3rd day, I weighed in at 235 lbs. Therefore I have dropped 6 lbs. thus so far.

Day Two Recap

I survived day two of the South Beach Diet I am on. Strangely enough, my body has still not cried out due to the fact that I am starving it of sugar and starches. Typically by the 2nd or 3rd day, I feel drained and have a headache because the body is saying, “Gimme some sugar! Gimme some starch, baby!” That hasn’t happened yet (and hopefully won’t).

Here is what I consumed on Day 2 (Tuesday):

Breakfast:

Turkey Breast w/ Cheddar (4 slices)
Spicy V8 Juice (6 oz.)

Lunch:

Hamburger Patty (16 oz.)
Zuccinni, Yellow Squash and Yellow Pepper Melody (1 serving)

Dinner:

Mahi Mahi (10 oz.)
Black Beans garnished with peppers and cabbage (2 servings)
Salad w/ Vinagerette

Other:

Coffee (3/4 pot)
Oolong Tea (1 cup)
Water (64 oz.)
Peanuts (handful)

Excercise:

I had a pretty good walked with Jodi (my dog) for about 45 minutes or approximately 2.5 miles. She was really excited and as such, was pulling hard for the first part of the walk, which in turn makes me walk fast. My legs were a bit sore after the walk.

As I weighed myself the 3rd day (today), I weighed in at 236 lbs. Therefore I have dropped 5 lbs. thus so far.

Day One Recap

I started a few days later than everyone else as I knew I’d cheat during Superbowl. And boy did I cheat - pizza, wings, chocolate, stouts and IPAs… well, you get the point.

Here is what I consumed for Day 1 (Monday):

Breakfast:

Skipped (too busy with work and before I knew it, lunch had arrived)

Lunch:

Albacore Tuna (6 oz.)
Black Beans garnished with cheddar cheese (8 oz.)
Spicy V8 Juice (6 oz.)

Dinner:

Hamburger Patty (16 oz.)
Cabbage Soup (2 bowls)
Salad w/ Vinagerette

Other:

Coffee (3/4 pot)
Water (80 oz.)
Oolong Tea (1 cup)
Peanuts (handful)

Excercise:

I walked with Jodi (my dog) for about 55 minutes or approximately 3 miles. It was a good workout as part of the walk was uphill and Jodi was pulling me pretty hard.

The only real craving I had was for buttermilk biscuits which occurred towards dinner time. Other than that, no problems on day one adjusting to the new diet. However, I expect that to change around days 3 and 4 as my body begins to realize that I am starving it of sugars and starches.

As I weighed myself the 2nd day (today), I weighed in at 240 lbs. Therefore I have dropped 1 lb. the first day.

The Starting Point - How Fat I Currently Am!

Hi, my name is David Wallace and I am fat. At least my fat is well proportioned so I don’t look obese or anything like that. However, I need to lose some weight. Every since I started working in search marketing over ten years ago and stopped doing manual labor, I have put on the pounds. In fact when I got married to my lovely wife, Irma, in 1991, I weighed 175 lbs. and had a 30 inch waist.

Today, I weighed in at 241 lbs. and have a 41 inch waist. Ouch!

When Donna first asked me to join the fight against fat and help out charity in the process, my first response was, “Who you callin’ fat?” But in all seriousness, I think it is a great idea. I was planning on shedding a few pounds anyway, especially seeing that SMX West is fast approaching. So why not combine that effort and help a charity at the same time.

I am actually not going to start my diet until Monday as today is Irma’s birthday and Sunday is the Superbowl. Therefore, I will officially start on Monday so all my competitors have a jump on me.

The method - South Beach Diet in which the first two weeks I have to completely abstain from all starches, all sugars and all alcohol. That means no pasta, no white breads, no fruits and no wine. I am allowed to eat lean meats and vegetables and some dairy. The fact that I love pasta, Jolly Rancher Fire candy and red wine makes the first two weeks really tough. However, in the past I have lost as much as 25 lbs. in the first two weeks with this diet. My problem has been sticking with it.

After the two weeks, I can incorporate whole wheats (brown rice, whole grain pastas and breads) but still need to stay away from heavy sugar intake (moderate red wine is fine - no whites).

Besides South Beach, I walk at least 2-3 miles, 5 days a week, try to drink one glass of Oolong Tea (really strong green tea) each day and take the following supplements - CLA, Citrimax and Hoodia.

I would eventually like to get to around 190 - 200 lbs. and have a 36 inch waist. I have a long way to go, but hey - it has taken me a long time to develop the body I currently have.

So there you have it. Wish me luck. No matter who ends up being the biggest loser, we all win as we will be lighter, healthier and one of the fabulous charities listed on this site is going to get a nice donation.
