Day Eleven Recap

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day which not only means gifts and romance but an elegant dinner as well. Irma and I decided to stay home rather than fight the crowds by trying to go to a restaurant. I cooked her a nice Valentine’s Dinner which included New York Strip, Long Green Beans in my own special sauce and a nice Salad with Romaine Lettuce, Feta Cheese and Newman’s Family Italian Recipe dressing.

Even though I am not supposed to have any alcohol the first 2 weeks of this diet, I decided, “What the heck - it’s Valentine’s Day!” Just one bottle between the two of us. That one ended up being three so I don’t know how that is going to help the diet much but we sure had fun drinking them… ...Continue reading

Now I know how the folks on Biggest Loser feel

when they step on the scale for the weekly weigh in and about fall over in shock to find out they’ve lost NOTHING.

Yep. Nothing.

This friggin muscle I’m building better start burning calories for me soon.  (Though it makes me glad I’m tracking what I eat so carefully…at least I know it’s not my fault for sneaking cookies or eating way more calories than I think I am.)

So much for hoping to be down ten pounds before we head to Italy.

*grumble, grumble, grumble*… ...Continue reading

By the Way, A Word About My Charity

Yesterday, I celebrated 5 years of being a cancer survivor. Now, the word survivor can be confusing. I’m not cured yet. I do have traces of suspicious tissue remaining in my body. But they only show up in the blood work and aren’t found on MRIs or Nuclear Body scans, so it’s not life threatening or anything.

The Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association (ThyCa) is a truly amazing organization and I don’t know what I would have done without them. The funny thing about thyroid cancer is how misunderstood it is by the medical community in general. You see endocrinologists, not oncologists to be treated (as well as surgeons and nuclear medicine physicians).

And even then, so many endocrinologists do not know how to treat thyroid cancer. ThyCa helped me understand my… ...Continue reading

February 15, 2008 - 163.0

It was especially good news to lose another 1/2 lb. b/c I ate 4 pieces of Brooklyn style pizza from Domino’s last night!

Plus about 3 cookies and 2 pieces of chocolate. I did have a salad for lunch yesterday.

I know I haven’t lost in big numbers like the others have, but I am losing steadily and not giving up what I love to eat. I’m just eating in smaller quantities (minus the pizza last night, of course!).

And like I pointed out yesterday, if I continue to lose a 1/2 lb a day, I’ll meet my goal in just 2 months. Now, to be realistic, there will be days I fall out of the fewer calories plan, so it’s important that I begin adding exercise in the mix and have some… ...Continue reading

Week 2 Weigh-In

It’s that time again, when I have to step on the scale and see what’s what. Today’s results: 183.0 lbs, which is a nice 7 pound drop.

I’m on my way to a healthier, more active life. Onward!… ...Continue reading

Weekly Weigh In

The moment of truth:

Weight: 164.8

Inches lost: .5

It could have been worse, since I had a bad weekend and a kid’s birthday party this past week, so I’m pretty pleased.  While the dramatic drop last week was really exciting, you can’t expect to lose that much on a regular basis.  2 pounds is about right.  )

Meals for the Day - 02/14/08

02/14/08 - Breakfast

More Kashi.

Breakfast: 265 calories, 4.5 grams fat, 44 grams carbs, 8 grams fiber, 15 grams protein

02/14/08 - Lunch

Man, Thursday lunches are reptetive…but tasty. Same french onion soup and cafe salad with baguette as last time. Once again; no cheese, no croutons.

310 calories, 9 grams fat, 49 grams carbs, 7 grams fiber, 9 grams protein

02/14/08 - Dinner

Valentine’s Day dinner, so Greg called to see if I wanted him to bring home Chipotle. Mmmm….Chipotle. In yet another learning example of what I used to eat and what I SHOULD be eating, I went and ran the numbers. Ordered my usual chicken fajita burrito bowl, but had them leave off the cheese and… ...Continue reading

These Are a Few Things I Miss

Although I am doing pretty good with this diet, there are some things I am starting to miss.

  • Rice in my Tom Ka Gai Soup.
  • Donuts from a new gourmet donut shop we have in Anthem.
  • Red Wine, especially today on Valentine’s Day.
  • Pizza
  • Pasta - Angel Hair, Fettucini Alfredo, Bowtie - it’s all good.
  • Ice Cream - I love Breyer’s Vanilla Bean w/ no sugar added which I could probably have but I am resisting for the 1st 2 weeks.
  • Peppermint Lifesavers, Fire Jolly Ranchers and Jaw Breakers - yes I’m a sucker for these three hard candies.

Okay, got that off my chest. Now to go get a celery stick. :p… ...Continue reading

Day Ten Recap

You may getting a bit bored with these “Daily Recaps” but honest, I am going to stop after two weeks. The idea of the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet is to cut out all starches and sugars and stick to moderate portions of lean meat, vegetables and dairy products. No fruits (meaning no wine), no alcohol of any kind, no potatoes, rice, breads, etc.

Therefore it is beneficial to me and possibly those reading to chronicle daily eating and exercise habits to show that you can survive for two weeks on this kind of diet and actually lose a good amount of weight.

After the two weeks when I begin to incorporate whole grains again, I won’t be doing daily recaps but rather will most likely update on… ...Continue reading
